Employee Spotlight: Meet Marinelza D.

Employee Spotlight: Marinelza D.

How long have you been with Neighborhood, and what has been the most rewarding part of your journey here?

I was hired in November 2020 to work with the Medicaid Clinical Engagement Team. I would say that the most rewarding part of my job is to educate members through assessment calls, especially those in the Hispanic population. I appreciate the interpreter services that are in place; however, when I can educate members in Spanish about the benefits they have, it really makes my day.

How does your work impact our members and the community?

Knowledge is power! When members understand their rights and benefits, it makes an enormous difference in their perspective about leading a healthier lifestyle. Information about the preventive care, annual check-ups, and mental health services that are available through Neighborhood goes a long way.

What is a fun fact about you that your colleagues might not know?

I am a firm believer in vacationing, and I love cruising.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I love Jesus and history and would love to travel to Israel. Why? I want to visit places where he was spreading His love.

What inspired you to pursue further education or mentoring others?

Growing up in a Hispanic household, education is introduced early – even in the womb. For me, and as a female Christian Latina, I had a desire to get my master’s degree. I set a goal to earn it before turning 50 years old, and that is exactly what happened! It is never too late to return to school and get a degree! I try to instill the thought that God gives us desires in our heart for a reason, sharing this belief with my daughter, granddaughters and all who know me. Mentoring for me also is important. Others took the time to share knowledge with me and therefore it is important to pay that forward.

How do you balance work, education, and personal commitments?

Self-care is essential. Whatever you have passion for doing, just do it. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone. Life is complicated, but my personal beliefs – and as a believer in Christ – I trust the process.  I’ve learned how to disconnect and take that time to travel and reset. In addition, I love family time, my Zumba classes, and stretching sessions.

What is one piece of advice you would give someone considering going back to school?

Going back to school is hard, and 100 percent worth it. Neighborhood is fantastic at collaborating with employees and accommodating needs. So, talk to your manager and make a plan. It will require commitment, time, sacrifice and in the end, it is so worthwhile.

What is one activity, hobby, or tradition you enjoy outside of work that helps you recharge and approach each day with purpose?

Sundays at church help me approach each day with a purpose.
