Out-of-Network Coverage
Most of the time, the health care services that you get must be from a provider who is in our provider network. But sometimes, you may need to get care from a provider who is not in Neighborhood’s provider network. In most cases, these services won’t be covered. However, you may be able to get an exception to receive care from an out-of-network provider and your services will be covered. These exceptions include:
- Emergency or urgently needed care
- Kidney dialysis services received at a Medicare-certified dialysis facility when you are temporarily outside of Rhode Island
- Family planning services
- Care during a Continuity of Care (COC) period
The COC period is for members who were receiving treatment or seeing a provider before having coverage with Neighborhood. Even if the provider is not in our network, your services are covered during the COC period. - Care needed during a declared disaster.
Please note, out-of-network providers are under no obligation to treat Neighborhood members, except in emergency situations. Please call Member Services or see your Evidence of Coverage for more information, including the cost-sharing that applies to out-of-network services.
