National Study of Medicaid Plans Places Neighborhood Among Highest-Rated in the Country

Non-profit health insurer stands alone among Rhode Island plans when it comes to Prevention, Treatment, and Consumer Experience

September 20, 2017 (Smithfield) – Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island today shared the results of the latest National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) survey which once again finds the non-profit health insurer leading the way nationally when it comes to providing access to high-quality health care.

Neighborhood scored an impressive overall rating of 4.5 / 5, placing it among the top eleven Medicaid health plans in America. Close to 300 Medicaid plans nationwide are eligible for NCQA verification and analysis.

According to NCQA’s 2017-2018 ratings, Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island is:

  • One of only five plans in the nation to be rated 4 or higher on all three components of NCQA’s rating system: Consumer Experience, Prevention, and Treatment
  • The only plan in Rhode Island to be rated a 4 or higher on all three of those components
  • One of only six plans in the country to be rated 4.5 or higher for three years in a row(i.e., in every year since these ratings replaced NCQA’s annual Health Plan Rankings)

“This extraordinary recognition is due to the work of Neighborhood’s outstanding employees, who consistently put the needs of our members first,” said Peter Marino, Neighborhood’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “These results also make it clear that Neighborhood’s provider network, including the state’s Community Health Centers, is among the very best in the country.”

NCQA ratings are the result of rigorous analysis of multiple, independent assessments of a health plan’s quality levels and customer service performance.

Neighborhood’s high rating on the “Consumer Experience” metric, for example, reflects exceptionally positive patient-reported experiences of care, including interactions with medical professionals in Neighborhood’s provider network as well as interactions with Neighborhood’s own staff.

Similarly, the greater the number of a health plan’s members who receive preventive medical care, the higher that plan’s rating when it comes to “Prevention”.

And the more members who received recommended care for certain conditions, the higher the plan’s rating in the “Treatment” category.

NCQA explains in further detail here how it arrives at its ratings.

“Since it was founded almost a quarter of a century ago, Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island has been committed to the idea that everyone in this state should have access to high-quality, affordable health care,” said Dr. Francisco “Paco” Trilla, Neighborhood’s Chief Medical Officer. “Everyone who works at Neighborhood believes that goal is possible and works hard to make sure our members are getting exceptional care.  Earning this recognition indicates we continue to head in the right direction.”
