Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island wants to help you understand upcoming changes to Medicaid.

These changes may affect some members over the next few months and years. However, not everyone with Medicaid will be affected. Learn more about these changes, how to stay informed, and what steps you can take to keep your health coverage below.

New federal Medicaid requirements may affect members differently depending on their eligibility category. Upcoming changes may include:

  • Eligibility changes for certain non-citizens
  • Work and community engagement requirements for some adults
  • More frequent renewals
  • Updates to retroactive Medicaid coverage rules

The federal government has passed new laws that require changes to Medicaid programs across the country. The State of Rhode Island is working to implement these changes over time.

Six-month renewals for certain adult Medicaid members

January 1, 2027

Changes to retroactive Medicaid coverage for past medical bills

Many of the eligibility-related changes are focused on specific member groups.

Changes may affect:

  • Some Medicaid members who are not U.S. citizens
  • Certain adults ages 19-64 enrolled through Medicaid expansion
  • Adults who are not pregnant
  • Adults who are not Medicare beneficiaries
  • Adults who are not parents or caretakers of children (under 18 years old)

 

If a change affects your coverage, the State will contact you and provide information about any actions you may need to take.
