Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island Named the Top-Ranked Medicaid Plan in Rhode Island and the #5 Medicaid Plan in the U.S. in NCQA's Health Insurance Plan Rankings 2014-2015

-- Neighborhood is One of Only Two Health Plans in the Country to be Included Among NCQA’s Medicaid Top Ten Every Year Since Rankings Began --

Providence, RI (September 22, 2014) – Peter M. Marino, President and Chief Executive Officer of Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island (Neighborhood), is pleased to announce that Neighborhood has once again been named a top ten Medicaid health plan in America according to the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). Neighborhood has held a top ten spot since NCQA began ranking health plans in 2004, and is one of only two health plans to achieve that designation. NCQA has posted all rankings (Medicaid, private and Medicare) on its website

“This is great news that our Medicaid health plan partners continue to be recognized by NCQA as being among the best in the country,” said Steven M. Costantino, Secretary of the Rhode Island Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS). “Neighborhood continues to raise the bar in the delivery of high quality health care to Rhode Island’s children, families and adults with disabilities.”

NCQA rankings are based on three types of quality measures: clinical quality, consumer satisfaction and results from NCQA’s review of a health plan’s health quality processes. 90 percent of America’s health plans measure care and service performance using these NCQA Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®)1 measures.

“These results indicate that Rhode Island is successfully expanding health insurance coverage to tens of thousands of people while continuing to provide high quality care,” said Merrill Thomas, Providence Community Health Centers’ CEO and Neighborhood Board Chair. “Congratulations to Neighborhood and its many provider partners who make this happen.”

Neighborhood membership has grown 60 percent since November 2013 due to the Affordable Care Act, decisions Rhode Island’s leaders have made to extend managed care to more people and its mission to expand access to quality care to underserved populations. The company currently serves more than 147,000 members.

“The survey results also tell us that ninety-seven percent (97%) of our members would recommend Neighborhood to friends or family,” said Marino. “We’re very proud of these results and believe they help affirm that Neighborhood really is a different kind of health plan.”
