Who We Are
Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island (Neighborhood) exists to improve access and health in Rhode Island. This is an unusual statement for a health plan, but we are driven a compelling vision, devoted to the people we serve and committed to delivering the highest quality, most cost-effective service.

Our mission
At Neighborhood, our reason for existence is clear.  What we do, how we do it and how the world will be different because of our work is ingrained into our corporate culture. We are a force and part of a movement to make sure quality healthcare is an accessible human right in this state, country and world.

Who we serve
The more than 75,000 members we serve are people at risk of being left behind by the current health care system. These are kids, moms, families and adults with disabilities who, for a variety of reasons, just need a little extra help right now. The majority of the parents are working, but do not receive health insurance through their employers. Yet, these parents remain full of hope, doing everything they can to provide a better life for their kids.

Who works at Neighborhood
The nearly 185 employees of Neighborhood come from diverse backgrounds, but are all committed to creating a more equitable health care system.  Our array of experiences allows us to have a broad perspective and great creativity in facing whatever challenges arise.  Unlike many other health insurance companies, we have nearly 30 nurses and social workers on staff.  This structure speaks to our focus on active and compassionate care management for our members; we know that people who are alienated from the health care system require additional advocacy, outreach and support.

Who we work with
Neighborhood was founded in 1993 by Rhode Island's Community Health Centers and is proud of its community-based heritage.  Like the CHCs, we seek to become integrally connected to the local community and the partners with whom we collaborate.  Our current network of providers includes the CHCs and thousands of other private practices and specialists.  Our primary financing partner is the State of Rhode Island, for which we deliver RIte Care, Medicaid benefits.  Additionally, we join with hundreds of dynamic organizations throughout Rhode Island to effectively transform healthcare delivery in our state.

How we do it
Neighborhood is committed to delivering the highest quality services.  We have been rated “Excellent” by the National Committee for Quality Assurance since 2001 and work with our provider sites to achieve the best standards of care.  We have a record of innovation that includes unprecedented service to children with special healthcare needs, children in the state foster care system and members requiring medical interpretation services.  At the same time, we are mindful stewards of precious resources and funds.
